Importing your household

Since January 1993, when the single European Act became effective , other EU citizens can import their household without customs formalities. You will need a inventory list though, with all items that you bring into the country.

You may want to be cautious with some items, when importing to France. These include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Wild fauna and flora
  • life animals
  • medicine and medical products, unless for personal use.
  • certain sensitive computer ware and technology
  • firearms and ammunition
  • art and collectors items.
  • plants, although this usually doesn't cause any problem when plants are imported as a personal household item.
  • animal products

If you are in doubt, you may want to check with the French customs office.

Visitors may bring their belongings, including cars, campers, boats, caravans etc. but these cannot be sold or even given away. All imported items must be also exported before the expiration of the 90 day period.

Non-EU residents can import their personal belongings free of sales taxes. This includes vehicles, caravans boats etc. , but they must have been owned by you for at least 6 months, or if you can proof that the goods were purchased in the EU and sales tax has been paid. For items that you owned less than 6 months and purchased outside of the EU, sales pax or VAT must be paid.

The application to import your household can be obtained by your local customs office or Direction Régionale des Douanes. It is also possible to clear customs in France, other than at the border. You will need a certificate to proof that you declared your goods at customs, this way you are able to transport your goods within France, awaiting clearance at the location of your choice.
